ATROCITIES
  AGAINST JEWS
    STIR BRITISH

  LONDON, Mar. 24 (AP)—The Bri-
tish government, like that of the
United States, has started inquiries
through its foreign office into the
reports of atrocities against Jews
in Germany.
  Premier MacDonald announced
this action was being taken when
he was asked, during a discussion
in Parliament, of the German situ-
ation concerning an unconfirmed
report that 1,400 persons had been
slain in Hamburg.
  London newspapers today at-
tacked the reported violence of the
Hitler regime in Germany and the
censorship of news reports. Mean-
while many Jewish traders have
started boycotts of German goods
but others have hesitated to fol-
low suit, fearful of reprisals
against Jews in Germany.
In the House of Commons dis-
cussion yesterday, Josiah Wedg-
wood, a Labor member, declared
“pro-German” England has been
completely converted into “pro-
French” England because of the
activites of the Nazis under the
Hitler government.
“May I ask whether the prime
minister is acquainted with the
steps the American government
has taken in order to put an end
to this state of things and whether
he has any conformation of a
story that 1,400 persons have been
put to death in Hamburg alone?”
asked Wedgwood.
Leaders of the more than 300,000
Jews in great Britain, represent-
ed on the Board of Jewish Depu-
ties, are to meet in London Sun-
day to decide whether to urge a
boycott or take some other action
in behalf of the German Jews.
